Limited In his introduction, Ian Haydn Smith, sets the expectations of what to come by saying, “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die was never intended as a “best of” collection..”. This assertion, by definition, gives the authors/editors complete freedom to bend selection criteria at will. In other words, it provides them with a “poetic licence” to make up their own selection rules. And this lies at the heart of my immense disappointment when I went through this latest edition. The book does indeed contain many of the great films cinema created since the 1900s BUT at the same time completely ignores some talented directors and their great work, for no apparent reason. For example: Jules Dassin and some of his excellent noir work such as Rififi and Naked City. Ryan’s Daughter. Jason And The Argonauts the story that inspired Tolkien to write his great quest story Lord Of The Rings. Days Of Wine And Roses the best ever dramatised study of alcoholism. Daphnis And Chloe an early movie and the first ever European film to contain modest nudity. Lifeboat a great film of the human character and condition in a confined space. Zorba The Greek with its excellent depiction of the bigger than life but flawed human character of the lead role. East Of Eden, excellent adaptation of Steinbeck’s great novel. And, many more. And yet low rated movies such as Shaft, Pink Flamingos, Salo, Top Gun, Vinyl, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and many more, somehow have found their way into the book!I fully understand and accept the fact that in a our world today, that is the whole of the world and not just a handful of countries, it becomes a colossal task to pick just 1001 movies from the plethora of movies that you could honestly and fairly propose as the films that one must see before they die. That would be mockery, and that is exactly where this book falls down with a weighty thud.Extremely disappointed and really wondering as to what the real value of this tome is, in our digital age, where well informed film data-bases are freely available and where their content and numerous critic or public reviews can offer the reader a far better starting position to create their very own 1001 movie lists of the truly great movies. A Great Book.

85. 85. 生きる [Ikiru] (1952) ****. Of all the movies on the list, this is the one that most demands a re-watch. I like it enough as it is, but didn't love it. It is rare for me to dislike any Kurosawa, including his pre-1950 films or his post-Ran colored ones, but this one almost comes close.
